The story of The Gulch

The Gulch was exactly what it sounds like — the smoky railroad cut serving Union Station, left mostly derelict when the trains faded. Its 2000s rebuild made it the South's first LEED-certified neighborhood, all glass towers and rooftop patios, and one black brick wall made it famous: Kelsey Montague's What Lifts You wings, the interactive mural that put ten thousand outstretched arms on the internet. Street-level art has multiplied around it, and the district connects on foot to Frankie Pierce Park's suffrage walls where the rail yard used to run.
