The story of West End

West End runs from Vanderbilt's campus to Centennial Park, home of the city's grandest artwork: a full-scale replica of the Parthenon, built for the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition when Nashville declared itself the Athens of the South — and rebuilt in permanent materials because nobody could bear to tear it down. Inside stands Alan LeQuire's 42-foot gilded Athena, the largest indoor sculpture in the western world. The greenways and hillsides nearby collect quieter surprises, from painted rail trestles to lyric-covered steps.
